European Box -
Buxus sempervirens
Group Planting
This is an evergreen shrub or small tree growing up to 1 to 9 m tall, with a trunk up to 20 centimetres in diameter Arranged in opposite pairs along the stems, the leaves are green to yellow-green, oval, 1.5 – 3 cm long, and 0.5 – 1.3 cm broad. The flowers are inconspicuous but highly scented, greenish-yellow, with no petals.
The tree group was collected from Barry Walker’s hedgerow in July as a large two tree clump. It was then planted into a tray to recover a little. All went well. The Box recovered so well that it was decided to add the tree to the National Collection as a project.
The intention is to show visitors how a Bonsai is created from collected stock.
The tree will be developed and trained on site so the journey can be observed and documented. This will illustrate how any such material undergoes a series of steps to becoming a display quality tree.
This departure from having just a display of mature and developed trees will give visitors an insight to the hobby of Bonsai
General Care:
Buxus prefer moist to dry soils that drain well, suited to almost any type of soils and a wide range of PH values, very hardy and evergreen.
It is suited to partial shade to full sun conditions, lightly feed through the growing season with general feeds, best trained by clipping and growing into shape rather than wiring.
Avoid over watering and keep eye out for pests at all times!
