Collection - No 13Satsuki AzealeaThis species of Rhododendron is native and widely spread between latitudes 80°N and 20°S and from coastal to 3,000 meters high The greatest diversity of these lovely trees is around the south eastern Himalaya and northern Burma, Rhododendron is a very large genus with many subgenera, of which Azalea are just one. Mostly evergreen with bright coloured flowers. ranging from 1/2 meter to 30 meters in height. Now very popular as garden plant all across the globe. Azaleas have been cultivated in Japan for centuries and are widely used as Bonsai, many hundreds of species now exist due to breeding . General CareThey need slightly acidic soils and do not like dry roots, keep moist at all times, feed weekly until after flowering then halve the feed, also prune after flowering. Many people remove the flowers before they open if the tree is to be repotted that year, this is to reduce the stress on the tree.
