COMMON JUNIPER -
Juniperus communis

Native to all temperate areas in the northern hemisphere, with many subspecies, having a wide variety of growth habits, very tough and rugged shrub, foliage has needles when juvenile and scales when mature, though not in all subspecies very suitable and prised an Bonsai material.

General Care

Tough and resilient tree suited to harsh environments, avoid strong summer sun, use a fast draining soil. The strength of the tree is held within the foliage mass, folia feeds suit them very well, keeping the soil on the dry side and fine misting the foliage daily keeps them in good health.

History of this tree

This juniper was started as a cutting by Mike Sadler in the early 1970`s,  It was planted out into his garden as a simple garden shrub.  However, following his growing interest in Bonsai it was placed into a pot during the 1990`s as a project tree, with some help from Charlotte Walby and Steve Tolley.

At various bonsai workshops Mike developed it into this rather large tree in his collection of bonsai.   As a member of the FNBC he was aware of the collection and its standing in the gardens and was more than happy to bequeath it to the collection.

It is intended to place this tree as part of a display in front of the café area, a project that has been delayed by two seasons by Covid. Hopefully it will soon take pride of place at the end of the large patio area where it will indeed take pride of place in remembrance of Mike.

Bequeathed by Mike Sadler.
