Collection - No 7History of this Cedrus atlantica(Blue Atlas Cedar)The background to this tree goes back to February 1988 when Malcolm and Kath Hughes were asked by friends if they would like a Blue Atlas cedar for their bonsai collection. The tree in question had been planted in the front garden of a property, part of a recently built estate, near Pattingham, Wolverhampton. On arrival they found that the cedar, planted some seven years previously, had grown to nearly 14 feet, with a low branch growing close to the front ground floor window of the property. The tree was reduced to about six foot in height and the low branch reduced in length. Assuming it would require a two or three stage process of extracting the tree over a period of a year or more, Malcolm commenced digging down at a radius of about 18 inches around the tree. Pausing for a few moments, he rested against the cedar which promptly chose to tilt over onto the ground, exposing its roots.
